Industry knowledge

SC Shanghai New Material Tech. Co.,Ltd. (Shengchang) manufactures Custom Printing Film Roll stock for converters and brand owners who fill on their own lines. Our rollstock is built on 7-layer, 9-layer and 11-layer co-extrusion film blowing lines, with gravure and flexographic printing applied in-line or offline depending on structure and run length.

The range covers high-barrier food films, low-temperature frozen films, light-blocking cosmetic films and general moisture-proof rollstock. Widths, thickness, layer structure, sealant type, print design and core format are configured around the filling machine, the product and the shelf-life target rather than sold as a fixed catalogue item.

What We Manufacture in This Category

Our printing film rolls are flexible packaging substrates supplied as printed or unprinted rollstock. The base film is produced by multi-layer co-extrusion, which gives us control over barrier layer placement, sealant performance and mechanical strength in one continuous process. Where a laminated structure is required, we build PET, VMPET, AL, PA and PE combinations to reach the target oxygen and moisture transmission rates.

Printing is applied to a treated surface with controlled surface tension so that ink adhesion holds through filling, sealing, freezing and transport. We work with solvent-free and water-based ink systems for food-contact applications, and we can add matt, gloss, metallic or laser-effect finishes where the brand requires them.

Our Available Range and Where Each Type Fits

The three product families below are the configurations we build most often. Each one is a starting structure, not a locked specification; layer count, thickness and sealant are adjusted to the application.

Film Type Typical Structure Application Fit Key Performance Focus
Multilayer Co-extrusion Film Popsicle Printing Film Roll BOPP/CPP or co-extruded PE Frozen desserts, ice cream, popsicle flow-wrap Low-temperature brittle crack resistance, moisture barrier, easy-tear line
Low Temperature Resistant Puncture Resistant Steak Printing Film Roll PET/PA/EVOH/PE or PET/VMPET/PE Fresh and frozen meat, vacuum and thermoform lines Oxygen barrier, puncture resistance, seal strength, blood-leak prevention
Light-Blocking Oxygen-Isolating Cosmetic Printing Film Roll PET/AL/CPP or MAT-OPP/VMPET/PE Facial mask sachets, skincare tubes, cosmetic sachets Light blocking, oxygen isolation, chemical resistance, premium print finish

Beyond these three, we produce general barrier rollstock for snacks, confectionery, nuts, coffee and dry goods, and we supply the same film families as finished pouches through our Flexible Pouch Packaging range when a project needs bags instead of rolls.

Application Fit by Product and Process

Food and Frozen

High-barrier structures based on PA/EVOH/PE are used where oxygen and moisture ingress shorten shelf life. For frozen meat, seafood and desserts, the sealant and core layers are selected to stay flexible at low temperature so the film does not crack during freezing, stacking or transport. Puncture resistance matters when the product has bones, shells or sharp edges.

Cosmetic and Personal Care

Light-blocking and oxygen-isolating films protect active ingredients in mask sachets and skincare formats. These structures often use aluminium or metallised layers, so we balance barrier performance against print appearance and seal integrity.

Industrial and Consumer Goods

General moisture-proof rollstock is used for hardware, household products and dry consumer goods where durability and tamper evidence matter more than high oxygen barrier.

Critical Specifications We Confirm Before Production

  • Width: up to 1.2 m, matched to the filling machine's web width and trim allowance.
  • Thickness: typically 120 microns and above for high-barrier meat and cosmetic structures; thinner gauges for flow-wrap and light-duty applications.
  • Seal strength: above 35 N/15 mm for frozen dessert films and above 40 N/15 mm for high-barrier meat films, verified on the actual sealant against the customer's sealing conditions.
  • Barrier: oxygen transmission targets such as below 5 cm³/m²·24h for steak film, with moisture barrier set by the product's sensitivity.
  • Print: gravure or flexographic, up to 12 colours, with registration and colour targets agreed against a signed proof.
  • Core and roll format: core diameter, roll diameter, winding direction and splice policy set to suit the unwinder.

Configuration Options and Line Integration

We configure the film around the filling line rather than the other way round. For vertical form-fill-seal, horizontal flow-wrap, thermoform-fill-seal and vacuum lines, the variables that change are sealant type, coefficient of friction, stiffness, winding tension and the position of the easy-tear or peel layer.

  • Sealant options for PE, CPP and peelable systems.
  • Corona treatment level set for the chosen printing and lamination process.
  • Anti-fog, tear-resistant, moisture-proof and puncture-resistant functional layers.
  • Recyclable mono-material and bio-based options where the project targets sustainability goals, supplied through our Mono-Material Package programme.

Where the same artwork is needed on pre-made bags, we align the film specification with our Custom Printing Bag range so that rollstock and pouch versions of a pack perform identically on the shelf.

Quality Control and Acceptance

Production runs under ISO 9001, HACCP, BRC and GMP quality systems, with ISO 13485 also held for medical-related work. Raw material pellets are 100% new food-grade material, and incoming resin is checked before extrusion.

In-process and final inspection covers tensile strength, puncture resistance, seal strength, material composition and gas barrier performance. Environmental simulation testing includes freezing, vacuum and transport simulation. Each batch is traceable from raw material through to finished roll, and inspection reports can be issued with the shipment.

Acceptance is normally agreed on a signed print proof, a structure specification sheet and a first-article roll. Where the customer's line is the final judge, we supply sample rolls for a trial run before mass production.

Information We Use to Configure Your Solution

A workable quotation needs the following inputs. Where a value is not yet fixed, we propose a starting point and refine it during sampling.

Input Why It Matters
Product type, weight and shape Determines barrier, puncture and stiffness requirements
Filling machine type and web width Sets roll width, core, winding direction and sealant
Shelf-life target and storage conditions Defines oxygen and moisture barrier targets
Print artwork in .pdf or .ai Drives cylinder or plate preparation and colour matching
Order quantity and repeat schedule Affects cylinder amortisation and production planning
Compliance requirements (FDA, EU, etc.) Selects food-contact ink and inner-layer materials

Production Capacity, Delivery and Documentation

We operate 2 printing lines with a daily capacity of 550,000 packaging bags and 2,500 tons of roll film. The factory is in Songjiang District, Shanghai, about 50 km from Shanghai Port, which supports sea freight for volume orders and air freight for urgent trials.

Standard documentation includes the structure specification, print proof approval record, inspection report and packing list. Cylinder and plate artwork files are retained for repeat orders. Training on film handling, storage and sealing parameters can be arranged for line operators where a new structure is introduced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order quantity for custom printing film rolls?

MOQ depends on structure and print complexity. For gravure-printed rollstock with a new cylinder, the typical starting point is 10,000 pieces or the equivalent film length, with a cylinder cost of around USD 110. Digital printing through our Digital Printing-Low MOQ route supports smaller trial quantities without cylinder investment.

Can you match a film to our existing filling machine?

Yes. We need the machine type, web width, sealing jaw configuration and current film specification. From that we set roll width, core diameter, winding direction, sealant and coefficient of friction so the film runs at the line's rated speed without tracking or sealing faults.

What barrier performance can you achieve?

For high-barrier meat structures we work to oxygen transmission below 5 cm³/m²·24h using PA/EVOH/PE or PET/PA/EVOH/PE. For frozen desserts and general food rollstock, the barrier target is set by the product's sensitivity and the required shelf life, and we confirm it with a structure specification before production.

How long does production take?

For a repeat structure with existing cylinders, lead time is typically 15–18 days after artwork and deposit confirmation. New cylinder engraving and first-article approval add time, which we confirm in the quotation.

Do you supply recyclable or mono-material film?

Yes. We produce recyclable PE-based and mono-material structures designed to meet sustainability targets without losing the barrier and seal performance the application needs. These are configured through the same specification process as our standard films.

What files do you need for printing?

Print-ready artwork in .pdf or .ai format, with colour references and any brand guidelines. We return a proof for approval before cylinders or plates are made, and we retain the approved files for repeat orders.
